Kidepo Valley National Park

Set in the remotest northeast corner of Uganda lies Kidepo Valley National Park, said by the few people who have visited to be their favourite park in Uganda. In 2016, CNN Travel wrote Kidepo National Park: Lush landscapes offer ‘the best of Uganda.

Today, the park scores highly as a wildlife safari destination due to its spectacular, wild, rugged and semi-arid landscape, some 500km from Kampala. Traversed by large sand rivers, the park is renowned for its distinctive composition of wildlife, profusion of big game and over 77 mammal species as well as around 475 bird species according to Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Kidepo is Uganda’s most isolated national park, but those who make the long journey north through the wild frontier region of Karamoja would agree that it is also the most magnificent, for Kidepo ranks among Africa’s finest wildernesses. From Apoka, in the heart of the park, a savannah landscape extends far beyond the gazetted area, towards horizons outlined by distant mountain ranges.

During the dry season, the only permanent water in the park is found in wetlands and remnant pools in the broad Narus Valley near Apoka. These seasonal oases, combined with the open, savannah terrain, make the Narus Valley the park’s prime game viewing location.
